Destination:
Isle of May
The Isle of May is located in the Fife region off the coast of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is an island just a kilometer and a half long by 500 meters wide at its widest points. The island has a characteristic shape, in fact from the mainland it resembles a large whale. It is located eight kilometers offshore, at the estuary of the River Forth and is characterized by a low and rocky shoreline on one side and a coastline dominated by wide cliffs on the other. The island of May is certainly not famous for its geographical size but it turns out to be the most important colony of gray seals in Great Britain and in the right period hosts colonies of thousands of seabirds including Marangoni dal Ciuffo, Marine Magpies, Urie, Edredoni , Lightning terns, Common Terns, Arctic Terns, Three-toed Gulls but above all the famous Puffins, the island in fact in summer can count up to about 40,000 pairs.
Farne Islands
The Farne Islands are an archipelago located in the North Sea, off the coast of Northumberland and can count up to about 20 small islands, the number varies according to the tides that characterize this area. In this case we are just over the border with England. Here we will be able to explore the different islands and dock on the main ones. This area is one of the main nesting sites of the North Sea marine avifauna. On the islands it is very easy to observe colonies of thousands of birds. What is striking is the tranquility of the animals that remain indifferent even a few centimeters from the lenses of the photographers. The Farne Islands include a huge variety of avifauna including Puffins, Magpies, Urie, Edredoni but going down on the cliffs near the sea it can often happen to observe some specimens of Foca. Extremely unique here is the Tern population that nests just inches from the trail and tries to get you away from its nest when you walk next to them!
Bass Rock Island
Bass Rock Island is located about two kilometers offshore near the mouth of the Firth of Forth. From the ground it appears as a compact circular rock mass. The island is 107 meters high at the highest point. Here, the island’s typically black rocks turn white during the summer due to the very high density of Gannets that occupy practically every square inch of the island and because of their … guano. Bass Rock Island is in fact characterized by a population of over 75,000,000 pairs of Gannets, the largest colony in the world! In addition to the Gannets there are also other species of birds such as Puffins, Marangoni and Gazze Marine.

Recommended photographic equipment:
This itinerary offers a great photographic experience. Any equipment is enough to take home great shots. You can observe animals at all distances, therefore a 70-200mm can already be enough to capture great shots. For portrait lovers, I recommend bringing with you a focal length of at least 300mm. A medium telephoto and wide angle can be useful if you are interested in photographing the beautiful views of Scotland.
